    NBA ALL-STAR HOOP-IT-UP TOURNAMENT

    • NBA, WNBA, legends and celebrities joined up for the a new event in the All-Star Weekend: Hoop-It-Up.
    • The All-Star Hoop-It-Up was a three-on-three tournament featuring four teams consisting of an NBA player, WNBA player, NBA legend and celebrity. The event was a 3-on-3 half court, single elimination tournament.
    • This tournament replaced the 2Ball contest in the 2002 and 2003 edition before the creation of the Shooting Stars Contest.

    2002: Team International/Sacramento

    • Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Moses Malone, two of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players, led a star-studded lineup of NBA and WNBA players, NBA legends and celebrities competing in the inaugural All-Star Hoop-It-Up.
    • These were the 4 teams:

    HOUSTON TEAM:

    • Cuttino Mobley – Houston Rockets Guard.
    • Tina Thompson – Houston Comets Forward.
    • Kenny Smith – Houston Rockets championship teams (1993–94 and 1994–95).
    • Jamie Foxx – Actor.

    INTERNATIONAL/SACRAMENTO TEAM

    • Hedo Turkoglu – Sacramento Kings Forward (Turkey).
    • Ticha Penicheiro – Sacramento Monarchs Guard(Portugal).
    • Sarunas Marciulionis – Former NBA Player (Lithuania).
    • Tom Cavanagh – Star of NBC’s Ed (Canada).

    LOS ANGELES TEAM:

    • Derek Fisher – Los Angeles Lakers guard.
    • Lisa Leslie – Los Angeles Sparks center.
    • Magic Johnson – Los Angeles Lakers guard, winner of 5 championships (1980, ’82, ’85, 87, ’88).
    • Brian McKnight – Singer.

    PHILADELPHIA TEAM:

    • Aaron McKie – Philadelphia Sixers guard.
    • Dawn Staley – WNBA All-Star.
    • Moses Malone – Philadelphia Sixers championship team (1982–83).
    • Justin Timberlake – ‘NSYNC.

    SEMIFINALS

    • PHILADELPHIA 16 (Malone 6, Timberlake 2, Snow 8)
    • HOUSTON 8 (Smith 2, Mobley 4, Thompson 2)

    • LOS ANGELES 13 (Magic 4, Fisher 2, Leslie 5, McKnight 2)
    • INTERNATIONAL/SACRAMENTO 25 (Marciulionis 15, Turkoglu 6, Penichero 2, Cavanagh 2)


    FINAL

    • PHILADELPHIA 9 (Malone 5, Snow 4)
      INTERNATIONAL/SACRAMENTO 12 (Marciulionis 3, Turkoglu 7, Cavanagh 2)

     

    • Marciulionis impressed in the semifinals with 15 points (including 4 treys).
    • Malone inside, and Snow hitting shots from outside were too much for Houston.
    • In the final, players were very nervous missing a lot of shots. The game finished tied 9-9, and Turkoglu hit the winner 3 pointer in the “sudden death”.

     

    2003: Team Los Angeles

    • In the second and last edition of this contest, the number of teams was cut to only 2.
      Magic Johnson, repeating in the contest, and Dominique Wilkins led Los Angeles and Atlanta.
    • Wilkins, the local hero, didn’t disappoint and showed that he still could fly, after finishing an alley-oop.
    • Los Angeles team took an early advantage in the scoreboard thanks to Lisa Leslie, who was better than Sheryl SwoopesMarko Jaric and Magic took care of the advantage till the final 23-19.

    ATLANTA 19 (Wilkins 9, Terry 5, Swoopes 2, Muniz 3)

    LOS ANGELES 23 (Magic 6, Leslie 6, Jaric 7, Kutcher 4)

     

    ATLANTA TEAM:

    • Dominique Wilkins: Atlanta Hawks all-time leading scorer
    • Jason Terry: Atlanta Hawks guard
    • Sheryl Swoopes: 2002 WNBA MVP and Houston Comets forward
    • Frankie Muniz: “Malcolm in the Middle” star

    LOS ANGELES TEAM:

    • Corey Maggette: Los Angeles Clippers forward
    • Lisa Leslie: 2002 WNBA Finals MVP and Los Angeles Sparks center
